Counter-Terrorism Police Take Over Investigation into the Murder of Ann Widdecombe
The investigation into the death of former Conservative minister and Reform UK figure Ann Widdecombe has entered a new phase after Counter Terrorism Policing assumed responsibility for the case, following the arrest and subsequent re-arrest of a 28-year-old man on terrorism-related offences.
The development marks a significant change in what was initially treated as a straightforward murder investigation. However, police have emphasised that enquiries remain at an early stage and have urged the public to avoid speculation while investigators establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
A High-Profile Political Figure
Ann Widdecombe was one of Britain’s most recognisable political figures. Elected as a Conservative MP in 1987, she served in John Major’s government before becoming a prominent commentator on national politics following her departure from Parliament in 2010.
In later years, she became an outspoken supporter of Brexit and was associated with both the Brexit Party and Reform UK. Throughout her public life, Widdecombe was well known for her socially conservative views, her advocacy of stricter immigration controls and criminal justice reform, and her regular appearances on television and in the national media.
Her death has prompted tributes from across the political spectrum, with politicians acknowledging her decades of public service despite often disagreeing with her political positions.
The Attack
Police believe the attack occurred at Widdecombe’s rural home near Haytor on Dartmoor, Devon, on 9 July 2026.
Her body was discovered the following day after concerns were raised when she failed to respond as expected. Officers attending the property found she had sustained serious injuries, and a murder investigation was immediately launched.
In the initial stages of the enquiry, detectives stated that there was no evidence to suggest the incident was terrorism-related or politically motivated.
Investigation Developments
The investigation quickly expanded beyond Devon as officers pursued enquiries across England.
A 26-year-old man from Newton Abbot was initially arrested on suspicion of murder but was subsequently released without charge after detectives concluded he was not connected to the offence.
Attention then shifted to South Yorkshire, where police arrested a 28-year-old white British man in Rotherham on suspicion of murder.
On 13 July, investigators confirmed that the suspect had been re-arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. At the same time, responsibility for the investigation formally transferred to Counter Terrorism Policing.
Senior officers have stated that this decision followed the discovery of new evidence during the course of the murder investigation. However, they have not disclosed the nature of that evidence.
Why Counter-Terrorism Police Are Involved
The involvement of Counter Terrorism Policing does not, by itself, establish a political or ideological motive.
Under UK law, specialist counter-terrorism investigators may assume responsibility for cases where evidence suggests potential offences under terrorism legislation. Their role includes determining whether an attack was intended to influence government, intimidate the public or advance a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.
At this stage, investigators have not stated whether any of those criteria have been met.
Police have repeatedly stressed that no conclusions should be drawn until enquiries are complete.

Investigators have not revealed whether Ann Widdecombe was deliberately targeted because of her political profile or whether the attack arose from another motive.
Nor have they disclosed what evidence prompted the transfer of the investigation to Counter Terrorism Policing, whether the suspect acted alone, or whether detectives are investigating any wider network or associates.
The identity of the suspect has also not been released publicly, and no charges have yet been announced.

For now, the confirmed facts are limited. Ann Widdecombe was fatally attacked at her Devon home, a 28-year-old man has been arrested and remains in custody, and the investigation is now being led by Counter Terrorism Policing following the emergence of new evidence.
